History

In 1977, the Minnesota legislature established a system of eleven regional arts councils to distribute state government appropriations to small arts organizations around the state. Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council serves the 9-county area of south-central Minnesota.

Each regional arts council is an autonomous organization designated to assess arts needs, develop programs and services to meet those needs, and distribute funds to arts programs in its region. Most of the regional arts councils began as programs of larger regional development commissions.

The Region Nine Arts Council was a program of the Region Nine Development Commission until 1993, when Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, Inc. became an independent nonprofit organization, and became the designated organization by the Minnesota State Arts Board to serve the region.

Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council offers grant programs, a monthly newsletter, a monthly arts calendar, workshops and technical assistance to arts organizations and artists.
